I'm cool with the depiction. Gave a dark edge to the marketing of the movie, which should help distance from the usual "Hunger Games wannabe" comparison.

I'm 54 pages into it, just bought it today... It's been awhile since I read the first two so I'm a little out of whack, but reading it fairly fast. I hope I finish it by 3AM or so

I'm 69 pages into it and sometimes feel like I'm reading teenage porn. Can't wait to read more when I get back from work though, I want to know if Veronica Roth actually has a great imagination, or if she chickened out.
Where in the book are you now, @Darth?

I put it down before the meeting with The Allegient... I got sidetracked on Tolkien's Letters lol

My feelings are close to yours except I've had one love-esque scene so far that ended in just a rub fest.

It feels very Mockingjay-ish right now. Especially considering we have a similar plot point already-

'Heroine is trapped in the order filled life of a new regime and looks to escape, using her special place she must rally the others'

That's just me, that point might not be of coincidence to anybody else.

I'm ready to see the outside world... That's where the book will be defined for me I think.

I couldn't agree more. Hopefully this will turn around once they're out and she won't go on an adventure that kills half of the party. I'm not sure where it's going, but I'm looking forward to finding out.

I'm on pg 262, but i havent had a lot of time to read it. I like it so far, but i heard people have mixed feelings on the ending. They either love it or reeeeally hate it.

It can't be worse than how I felt after Mockingjay... No offense if you liked it :D

I'm about 200 pages into the book now and have to say I'm a little disappointed (don't know what I expected to be honest). Maybe it will turn around, but now it feels like she's cleaning up the mess she made for herself.
This is mainly why I always return to Potter after reading new fantasy (like the HG). The first books are great, but then they think they should 'finish' it and that's really a dumb idea, because they are not capable of a plot like that and their worlds are so flawed and their books get corny.

I couldn't even get past page 80 last night... I'm going to finish but it may take a bit. I can't handle the writing :(

It probably doesn't help that I just finished re-reading Lord of the Rings and The Silmillarion recently... It's hard to get accustomed to young adult writing after basically reading Bible English for 2 months.

Completely agree!!! Every series I've started in the last 4 years has had the third book curse.

The amazing thing about HP is that the books get better as they go in small ways, HBP-DH being phenomenal.

I wonder why so many new authors struggle to create enduring plots? They always fall into the same old trap with the protagonist in these dystopian worlds where they repeat the same mistakes and have the exact same goofy character arcs...

Given how the series is practically Harry Potter (young people who choose their own faction/house) + Hunger Games (dystopian world where a girl becames the leader of a revolution), it's not surprising. But I do think that Rowling's latest book have a flaw, they became larger and with lots of filler.

Also, Deathly Hallows suffered under the syndrome of "hero gets exiled when his home is being controlled by the bad guys only to return at the end in a full war".
  • Darth LedgerDarth Ledger Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭✭✭
I never felt that way about HP at all, it was completely logical for Harry not to go back to Hogwarts given that Voldemort had infiltrated everything.

As for filler I wish there had been more 'filler' in the first few books. She created a world so entrancing and magical that I could read a 1000 page novel just detailing random Hogwarts events if she wrote it.

The same cannot be said for any other series I've read except Lord of the Rings... And maybe Earthsea.

That's the difference. The first books we're too short. But the real problem is that Harry's story was always focused on him, or in Voldemort. Deathly Hallows would've been better if they showed the things that happened in Hogwarts, and how Voldemort managed to control everything.

Also, the "hero on exile" syndrome was created on GTA San Andreas, and it was used on The Dark Knight Rises, and Iron Man 3.

That's been around a long time, and it makes for a great story with a great author.

A bad writer can fuck up the best story and the great writers can bring a cliche plot to greatness. It's how not what 90% of the time.

That's why I make such a fuss about Chaos Walking trilogy. It differs and goes against all the usual "protagonist in a dystopian world" traps, and the plot is better drawn, you read the three books and you do get a sense the writer had all the story for the trilogy mapped all along.

Oh yeah, there is Mortal Engines too, which most claim is one of the best YA series around.

I think that, in a way, Hunger Games can be forgiven because it kind of started the whole dystopian mania. But man, the ones that came after it, seems to be repeating these patterns all over again.

The end wasn't the part that disappointed me at all, to me it was the best part of the book actually (:

I can see it tanking at the Box Office, I would be happy if it opened to $30 mil or so.

Trailer looks good. Though i'm expecting this to be the next YA adaption to bomb. Ala Mortal Instruments...

  • fawke83fawke83 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭
I will put some faith on it because Summit/Lionsgate knows their way with working with YA adaptations. Even Ender's Game, which so far has been their weakest attempt, has fared a lot better than all the other ones this year. And this trailer sold the story a lot better.

The trailer looks amazing :D it looks like they've adapted the book really well, and not a lot has changed. It looks almost exactly like i pictured it.

Um I just finished Allegiant (took long for my city to get a copy) and I'm still trying to recover from it. I cried a great deal and I thought the ending was good. :( :D
