edited September 2012 in General
"When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?"

Book to be released Thursday, September 27th.

    Book is 480 pages.

:O There's definitely more than meets the eye about this book. Something about a casual "war" and "election" like this is no mere 500-page book. There's got to be some aspect about the town she hasn't told us yet.

I don't know if you guys knew this but I didn't. The term "Casual Vacancy" is actually a thing in Politics. Just in case you're wondering ;)

So, it's politicial, but it's not a fairy tale, mixed with politics, like Jo said.
  • mattStrelowmattStrelow Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭✭✭
There's something mysterious in this description.
There's definitely going to be a supernatural take on it, or if not, at least a criminal suspense plot.

I like politics, and I generally like how Rowling writes politics (from what little she did in the HP series). I'm not so sure about um, the politics of the local village church right enough. It could either be really clever or it could be a bunch of 80 year olds squabbling.

Could always be both I suppose.
  • mattStrelowmattStrelow Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭✭✭
I love how the title sounds so mysterious yet it's so directly tied to the premise

    I love politics.
Yeah absolutely right. Anyone who has been on HPF for a considerable period of time has to love politics. ;))

Some questions I have been thinking about:

    1) Will the novel have any "special" ( read magic/wizardry/supernatural stuff) context?
    2) What do you guys think the setting of the story would be? Historical/ contemporary? The names sound quite old-world to me. :-?
3)Will it be a standalone book or will it have sequels too?

    Let the speculation begin lol.

Did anyone think of the Crucible? Just without witches and more about the church, loll.

Anyways, sounds great! Really excited for it!!!

Politics is fantastic if handled correctly. Rowling has already meddled with fantasy politics in Harry Potter. Perhaps she enjoyed writing the political aspects (as much as I enjoyed reading them) and that's what spawned this direction.
